Families

Family Therapy

Family therapy enables family members who care about each other to express and explore difficult thoughts and emotions safely. To understand each other’s experiences and views, appreciate each other’s needs, build on strengths and make useful changes in their relationships and their lives.

Family Therapy supports both individuals, dyads within families (like a parent and child or siblings) and the whole family unit to develop healthier communication, discarding or transforming negative relationship patterns.  This process can minimise and transform conflicts which translates to less fractures and disconnection between family members.

At Thrive we offer family therapy where you can improve relationships with your closest or even extended family members. You may address specific issues such as marital or financial problems, conflict between parents and children, or the impact of substance abuse or a mental illness on the entire family.

It’s important to note that services for families will not be recommended in domestic violence situations. Please contact one of the practitioners below to discuss best practice options and check out our resources page for contact information to domestic violence and Mens Behavioural change programs.

Couples

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy is an important and well recognised therapy that can support couples to gain insight into their relationship, resolve conflict and improve overall satisfaction. Couples therapy not only focuses on the difficult and destructive cycles within relationships, but helps to build on the existing strengths and resources of a couple. Couples come for therapy to navigate through all sorts of relationship issues. Common presentations include communication issues, emotional intimacy, parenting, infidelity and sexuality.

At Thrive, our Couples therapy provides a place where couples can begin to slow down and rest. Opening their minds and hearts to each other, feeling confident in the safe, assured environment of the clinic and practitioners.

Same-Sex Couples Therapy

Thrive Clinic is a proud member of the ACON ‘Welcome Here Project’ and recognise same-sex couples experience most of the same relationship issues as heterosexual couples. However, there can be added pressure caused by the difficulty of maintaining a strong relationship due to personal and societal heteronormative prejudices. The practitioners collaborating with Thrive all have experience and training working with same-sex attracted and diverse gender communities and approach couples therapy with the same acceptance, care and understanding as any clientele.

Couples Coaching

Thrive also offers a Couples Coaching service for connected couples. This is for couples at any stage of their relationship where they are looking to do a health check and refinement on their relating. Utilising an online program, and feedback sessions, Couples Coaching creates an opportunity to understand, with more depth, couples existing strengths and possible areas of growth through contemporary, evidence-based research, therapeutic discussion and education. Couples Coaching is offered by Sean Tonnet and is an essential ingredient for those looking to enrich their existing relationship well-being.

Separating Couples

We understand that relationships sometimes end. And we know that can be painful and often complex, especially when kids are involved. At Thrive we offer support for separating couples navigating a transition from their relationship that can translate into a kinder, more accepting position around ending, with a strong child focus. Through counselling services and education programs couples are able to build a stronger platform for separating consciously.

Note: It’s important to note that couples therapy is not recommended for partners experiencing domestic/partner violence. Please contact one of the practitioners below to discuss best practice options and check out our resources page for contact information to domestic violence and Mens behavioural change programs.

Thrive Clinic Mullumbimby Practitioner Children Therapy

Children & Adolescents

Child & Adolescent Therapy

Children, teens and adolescents carry, express and process their difficulties quite differently to adults. Young peoples brains are still developing and they also have different developmental needs to that of adults. As such, our approach at Thrive to working with children, teens and adolescents is necessarily different to that with adults, and involves a combination of play therapy and talk therapy depending on age and need. In this way, Thrive supports children, teens and adolescents across a range of issues that affects their everyday lives including trauma, anxiety, depression and grief.

Whether from complex family environments, separation, schooling or simply growing up, practitioners at Thrive offer specialised services for children and adolescents, helping them better understand, process and cope with their experiences.  Our aim is to support them to be happy, healthy, and carefree.

Child Consultation

Child consultation at Thrive are offered by Sean Tonnet . They are a specific process that invite parents to see their current family circumstances through the eyes of their children. Child consultations are often used at the time of separation, but are also invaluable in other family situations, where children may feel caught in family conflicts. Sadly, research shows us that this is one main causes to children experiencing anxiety and distress.

At Thrive, our child consultations are delivered to protect the rights and well being of children, whilst offering parents a valuable opportunity to consider their children’s experience within the family through their eyes. Importantly, supporting family dispute agreements to have a considered child focus. We understand that giving children a voice offers families better experiences and outcomes during difficult times.

Note:  Parenting is fulfilling, complex, and at times, overwhelming. In addition to helping your child grow in the healthiest ways, Thrive endeavours to support you while you navigate how to be the best possible parent.  For separated parents permission from both parents is usually needed to access child therapy services.
